Civil and Environmental Engineering

The Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Rice has created several interdisciplinary research centers including the NSF-sponsored Center for Biological and Environmental Technology, the Brine Chemistry Consortium of oil and gas production and services companies funds pacesetting research on the mechanisms of mineral scale formations. The department is also a leader in the area of flood prediction and radar-based flood alert systems with major funding from the Houston Endowment to the SSPEED Center for severe storm prediction. New initiatives include the next major field sampling and analysis program on air quality in Houston to support development of control strategies for ozone.
